Double Insight
w/ Corri-Lynn Tetz
Born in Calgary, Alberta, Corri-Lynn Tetz moved to Montreal where she obtained her MFA at Concordia University in 2015. Since then, she has called Quebec home and maintains a studio in the Mile End neighborhood of Montreal.
In an effort to maintain safety measures and ensure physical distancing, we have been visiting our artists in their studios virtually. Double Insight is a new series which offers a glimpse into the artist studio and workplace; the sacred place where creative life and creative process coexist.
Tetz’ work focusses on the female figure as a way to explore identity, subjectivity, sensation and desire through her use of personal archives, fashion photography, film and pornography; transforming images and meaning through explorations of pictorial space and the process of painting. While past work has drawn from the romantic histories of figures in landscape or notions of collective spirituality, the recent paintings explore representations of feminine sexuality and empowerment.
Painting primarily from photographs of 1980’s & 90’s men’s magazines, Tetz is shifting the male gaze, and in turn directing the viewer to a private, more personal experience with the subject. As such, Corri-Lynn is considering tropes within sexualized representations of women and how they relate to notions of power, freedom, shame, class, and dogma.
Corri-Lynn Tetz was featured in the Magenta Foundation’s publication Carte Blanche: A Survey of Canadian Painting and in 2012 she was a finalist in the RBC Painting Competition. Furthermore, she is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (2017), the Brucebo Foundation, Sweden (2016), the Conseil des Art et des Lettres du Quebec (2015) and The Canada Council for the Arts (2019). Her work is widely collected across North America.
