In an effort to maintain safety measures and ensure physical distancing, we have been visiting our artists in their studios virtually. Double Insight is an ongoing series which offers a glimpse into the artist studio and workplace; the sacred place where creative life and creative process coexist. ⁣

Double Insight
w/ Robin Arseneault

Robin Arseneault’s work lies at the intersection of sculpture, drawing and photography. An explorer of found objects, and a devotee to materiality, she creates her own visual language that begs to be understood.

Robin Arseneault is a Calgary-based artist, a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art (MFA) and of the Alberta University of the Arts (formally the Alberta College of Art & Design). Her work is represented in both public and private collections across North America.⁣

Calgary artist, Robin Arseneault’s work lies at the intersection of sculpture, drawing and photography. An explorer of found objects, and a devotee to materiality, she creates her own visual language that begs to be understood. Throughout her work she has consistently and creatively dealt with perceptions of folly, pathos and failure, where her materials and objects are stripped of their original meaning and re-presented in a sophisticatedly humorous way. Arseneault’s work takes many forms;
each as bizarre as they are funny and as refined as they are complex.

Robin Arseneault’s recent studio work includes a suite of ten Hairy Drawings on printed Kinwashi paper, each smudged back into with dry pigments. We are immediately aware of the materiality and tactility to these hairy surfaces. The Hairy Drawings conjure up a disembodied figure replete with hilarity and sensuality. This fractured sense of body continues with the intimate Table Sculptures, made from a variety of materials like ceramic pieces, bronze clay, found wood pieces and brass
