Sondra Meszaros is a Calgary-based artist whose practice explores counter-narratives of female sexuality and the representation of women within the history of image-making. Drawing on the legacies of feminist performance art and the irreverent strategies of Dada, her work is grounded in an ongoing process of collecting, archiving, and re-presenting visual reference materials. Through feminist and psychoanalytic lenses, Meszaros interrogates dominant visual conventions, disturbing and renegotiating the ways the female figure has been constructed within traditions of image-making.
Working primarily with repurposed photography, collage, and related processes, Meszaros reconfigures historical imagery to expose the cultural frameworks that have shaped women’s roles and representations. By altering and reframing these images, she subverts their original narratives, opening space for alternative readings that challenge the authority of established image-making traditions.
Meszaros graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art and Design and received her MFA from the University of Windsor. She currently teaches in the Drawing Department in the School of Visual Arts at the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary. In 2018, she was awarded a residency at the prestigious International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. Her work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections across North America and Europe.
